‘Failure to Yield’, a report by Union of Concerned Scientists (ucsusa.org), evaluates the contribution of genetic engineering (GE) to increasing crop yield in the United States, and contrasts that contribution with yield gain from other agricultural methods and technologies. The report reviews the literature on yield for the primary GE food/feedcrops, soybeans and corn. The report also evaluates the USDA field trial record for GE traits associated with yield over the past 20 years, and discusses the challenges ahead for more complex yield genes, such as transcription factors and signal transduction genes, now being considered by the industry.
